Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Caulescent perennial herbs.

Stems: Caulescent, stems 1 to several, creeping, rooting at the nodes, glabrous to flocose and glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades orbicular–reniform to ovate–cordate, 2–6 cm long, 1.5–5 cm wide. Surfaces glabrous. Margins crenate to entire. Palmately-veined; 5–9 veined. Sheathing petioles; 3–30 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 2–3 in umbels. Peduncles 1.2–4 cm long, Involucral bracts usually 2, ovate to suborbicular, 2.5–3 mm long, 1–5–2.5 mm wide, scariously margined, pedicels short, 0–4 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx teeth obscure or absent. Corolla of 5 petals; petals white to purplish or rose. Stamens 5, inserted on an epigynous disk. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovules 1 per cells, anatropous; styles 2, usually swollen at base into a stylopodium. Styles short, the stylopodium absent, carpophore entire.

Fruit: Fruit ovoid to orbicular; 2–5 mm in diameter; mericarps strongly flattened laterally; ribs usually 7–9; connected by conspicuous reticulations; an oil–bearing layer beneath the outer pericarp; but companion canals and vittae are usually absent. Seeds 1 per mericarp; embryo small; endosperm cartilaginous. seed face plane.

Ploidy: 2n = 17; 18*; 19; 20; 22; 33

Habitat: Naturalized in a wide range of habitats including meadows; ditches; bogs; and wet forest.

Elevation Range: 0–1,000 m.

  • Native to Asia. Naturalized prior to 1871 (Hillebrand, 1888). The plant widespread in the Hawaiian Islands is apparently the ubiquitous Asian diploid of this polyploid complex.
